Denitrification rates in a marine sediment as measured by the acetylene inhibition technique.

چکیده

A method has been developed for measurement of denitrification activity in sediments by application of the acetylene inhibition technique. Acetylene-saturated water was injected, at close intervals, into sediment cores which were then incubated for a few hours at the in situ temperature. Frozen segments of the cores were assayed for accumulation of N(2)O by a combined gas extraction and detection system. The segments were thawed under a stream of helium from which N(2)O (and other gases) was collected in a liquid N(2) trap, and the quantity of N(2)O was measured by gas chromatography. The maximum rate of denitrification in a coastal marine sediment was 35 nmol of N per cm of sediment per day at 2.5 degrees C, and the rate of denitrification for the total sediment was 0.99 nmol of N per m per day.

Capacity for denitrification and reduction of nitrate to ammonia in a coastal marine sediment.

The capacity for dissimilatory reduction of NO(3) to N(2) (N(2)O) and NH(4) was measured in NO(3)-amended marine sediment. Incubation with acetylene (7 x 10 atmospheres [normal]) caused accumulation of N(2)O in the sediment. The rate of N(2)O production equaled the rate of N(2) production in samples without acetylene. Complete inhibition of the reduction of N(2)O to N(2) suggests that the "acet...

Comparing denitrification estimates for a Texas estuary by using acetylene inhibition and membrane inlet mass spectrometry.

Characterizing denitrification rates in aquatic ecosystems is essential to understanding how systems may respond to increased nutrient loading. Thus, it is important to ensure the precision and accuracy of the methods employed for measuring denitrification rates. The acetylene (C2H2) inhibition method is a simple technique for estimating denitrification. However, potential problems, such as inh...

Denitrification and the nitrogen budget of a reservoir in an agricultural landscape.

Denitrification is an important process in aquatic sediments, but its role has not been assessed in the N mass balance of upper-Midwestern (USA) reservoirs that receive large agricultural riverine N inputs. We used a 4400-ha reservoir to determine the role of denitrification in the N mass balance and effectiveness in reducing downstream transport of NO(3-)N. Sediment denitrification was (1) mea...

Influence of geomorphological variability in channel characteristics on sediment denitrification in agricultural streams.

Within fluvial systems, the spatial variability of geomorphological characteristics of stream channels and associated streambed properties can affect many biogeochemical processes. In agricultural streams of the midwestern USA, it is not known how geomorphological variability affects sediment denitrification rates, a potentially important loss mechanism for N. Sediment denitrification was measu...

Nitrification, Denitrification and Nitrate Reduction Rates in the Sediment of Hiroshima Bay, Japan

Nitrification, denitrification and nitrate reduction rates in the sediments at two stations in Hiroshima Bay were studied seasonally from August 1994 to May 1995. The acetylene (C2H2) inhibition technique was used to evaluate the rate of these processes. The seasonal average of nitrification and denitrification rates ranged from 0.00 to 299 μg atN m–2h–1 and 0.00 to 69.0 μg atN m–2h–1, respecti...
